Some Volunteer Updates for the Marlborough Hydrangea Garden
Volunteers will be working in the garden every Thursday (6PM to 8:30PM) throughout the Summer of 2016 (and also Saturday mornings (8AM to Noon) as scheduled.
This week (Thursday, July 7):
We will continue preparing the beds by laying cardboard and mulch. We've also got specimens of the following to plant: Peegee Hydrangea paniculata (see photo above); Hydrangea macrophylla 'Twist-n-Shout'; Hydrangea macrophylla 'Grenan' (Nantucket Blue); Hydrangea serrata 'Preziosa' (Pink Beauty) and Hydrangea petiolaris 'Miranda' (Climbing Hydrangea).
And, there's still plenty of clearing to do in the wooded "shade" area of our garden. Bring your gloves and pruners and saws if that sounds like a good project for your personal stress therapy!

A Community Volunteer Day for the New Hydrangea Garden
and Plaza in Marlborough (8112 Paseo)
Volunteers are invited to come out and Make a Difference by helping us plant and prepare the site. We're covering most of it with a thick layer of recycled cardboard (to suppress grass and weeds) and then we're adding a good three inches of organic mulch. This will help us to manage the landscape and, as the cardboard and mulch break down, they will improve our soil.
We also plan to plant trees, shrubs and flowers this Saturday, June 18th.
Join Us Anytime That You Can Help Between
8AM to Noon
Please let us know if you're available and we'll reserve enough gloves and tools:
Can you bring the kids? Of course you can, because it's ALWAYS fun to play in the dirt!

Saturday, June 18th (10AM to 2PM) -- It's our first Marlborough Hydrangea Garden Volunteer Planting Date....but first things first. Here's an online tutorial on the basics of how we'll start improving the soil at our new garden at 8112 Paseo (Thank you bayfriendly.org). Already you (our KC volunteers) have two opportunities to help us build a beautiful urban retreat: 1) Let us know you're available to help for all (or part) of the work day on the 18th. That will help us know how much mulch to have at the site AND also how many plants we can plan to get planted on the 18th and/or 2) Stockpile your newspapers and cardboard to build our under-the-mulch weed block (tape and staples removed). Thank you for your help and support!

Our crowd-funding campaign is underway at ioby.org and, with the help of the Community Capital Fund (and some young artists) work has begun on building a beautiful new garden for the Marlborough communities of KC. Hydrangeas AND tulips somehow found their way onto at least one colorful mural at our public launch on 4/16/16. Announcing a new TOT initiative in partnership with the Marlborough Community Coalition!
While nobody, especially us, ever tires of planting tulips we are now get-ready-set-go and excited to participate in creating a new Hydrangea Garden and Community Plaza located in the heart of Marlborough Village.
Special thanks to the Community Capital Fund which awarded us a $20,000 grant to get started and also to ioby.org who is helping us move forward with our $3,640 matching funds/crowfunding goal.
So, enjoy the last 2016 blooming days of your tulips and then consider joining us Saturday, April 16 for our kick-off event.
Students from the Marlborough Community Center will create a mural on-site. A memorial bench honoring the Coalition’s founding president, Betty Ost Everly, will be installed. The bench was commissioned by Betty’s high school class reunion committee. Detailed garden plans will be available for review and volunteers can learn how they can be involved.
